FLASH INSTRUCTORS NEEDED!

The dates have been set for Charlestown School’s FLASH program (Fun Learning After School Hours). Now all that’s needed are some local talented instructors.

FLASH is a six-week program that provides after-school activities for one-hour a week and is coordinated by the Parent Teacher Organization at Charlestown School. The purpose of the program is to give our students new and exciting learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom environment. Over 200 students participate in this program each year.

Past FLASH classes have included karate, arts & crafts, beading, cooking and lego robotics, to name a few. Instructors decide the age of the children they wish to instruct, from kindergartners (age 5) to fourth graders (age 10), and receive $150 for the six-week session. All instructors must have a background check to participate in the program.

Classes are held Tuesday afternoons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. The 2012 FLASH Dates are: Feb 28, March 6, 13, 20, 27 and April 3.

You don’t have to be a teacher to teach a FLASH class just willing to show some enthusiastic children how to do something new. Grab a friend and teach a class together!

Several PTO events in danger!

Several PTO events are in danger of being removed from this year's PTO calendar. We don't want to cancel these events, but we currently have no chairpersons! If you can help with either of these events, please let us know as soon as possible!

FLASH Coordinator: FLASH (Fun Learning After School Hours) is a six-week program that provides after-school activities for one-hour a week and is coordinated by PTO at Charlestown School. The purpose of the program is to give the students new and exciting learning opportunities outside the traditional classroom environment. Over 200 students participate in this program each year and we really want to run this program! Currently we have someone to coordinate classes but we need someone to oversee the program. This position requires that the volunteer be available on the following dates: 2/28 2/6 2/13 2/20 2/27 and 4/3 and be at the school from 3 to 5 p.m.

Basket Raffle Coordinator: Our Basket Raffle is held annually with proceeds going to benefit classroom grants. If you like to shop and are a little creative, this is the position for you! Chairs or co-chairs would be great for this event! This event is scheduled for Saturday, April 28.

Scholastic Book Fair is This Week!

The Charlestown School Scholastic Book Fair is this week! This fundraiser brings in more than $1,000 and helps fund more library resources for students and faculty. It's also fun!

Grades 1-4 shop during their Library Class. Kindergarten students are encouraged to come with their families.
The Book Fair is opens each day from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Two Family Events: Thursday, Nov. 3 from 3:30-7 p.m. and Saturday, Nov. 5, 9-12.
Wish Lists for Classrooms are a great way to buy a nice, useful gift for a teacher.
PTO and other volunteers make it happen - thanks!

Pumpkin Glow & Bubble Show

Thank you to everyone who came out Friday night for the Pumpkin Glow and Bubble Show! We had a great turn out--over 400 people-- and around 100 pumpkins for our Pumpkin Glow! The photos at left show our bubble man, Keith Michael Johnson, putting an audience member into a giant bubble, as well as some of our awesome pumpkins! If you didn't get your pumpkin back Friday night, you can pick it up at school today in the back of the building.

If your child missed picture day or you forgot to send in your order form, don't worry, you can still order pictures. Every child had their picture taken yesterday. PTO Sponsors Sled dogs for Third Graders

Third graders didn’t have to travel far for their recent field trip. They only had to walk to the back of the school where they met Becki Tucker from Outlaw Ridge in Voluntown CT, and her team of sled dogs.
The presentation is a direct curriculum connection to the third grade’s study of the Iditarod which began in March. The PTO funded a donation to hold the presentation. All proceeds go to feed the dog team.

Holiday Fair Huge Success!

Thank you to all the volunteers, (including so many of our wonderful teachers) bakers, vendors, and shoppers who came out to support the Holiday Fair and Kid's Shop on Saturday. We had a fantastic day! A big Thank You to Santa who visited for a couple of hours to hand out candy canes, and the 4th Grade Chorus who put on an amazing show for us! Also thanks to Lisa Huzyk for chairing the bake sale for us this year! We sold out of nearly all our chili and chowder (A HUGE donation from the Feight Family) and all of the baked goods were delicious! Happy Holidays everyone!

Amulet Author Kazu Kibuishi Visits Charlestown School

On Friday, third and fourth graders at Charlestown School got a special treat....a visit from Amulet author Kazu Kibuishi! He showed the kids how he sketched his ideas and how he brought them to life through the magic of Photoshop! After a brief presentation, the kids were able to ask questions--and they had plenty! The hour-long presentation went by all too quickly and since there was no time for autographs, Kibuishi agreed to send autographs for all of the third and fourth grade students. In addition, he took time out to do a special drawing for Mrs. Reiser-Jones to hang in the library.

Kibuishi visited our school after accepting the 2010 Rhode Island Children's Book Award, which was hosted by Chariho Middle School. Each year, Rhode Island students who participate in reading the Rhode Island Children's Book Award Nominees (Rooster Games books) vote for their favorite book. The 2010 children's choice award is the book The Stonekeeper, Amulet 1, written and illustrated by Kibuishi.

Kibuishi was born in Tokyo, Japan and moved to the U.S. when he was a child. He graduated from Film Studies at the University of California Santa Barbara and works as a full time comic book artist. He is the author and illustrator of the popular graphic novel series for young readers, Amulet, as well as Daisy Kutter: the Last Train and the Flight anthologies.

Pumpkin Glow and Magic Show

Don't miss the fun on October 22! The Magic begins at 6:30 p.m. with Magician Lon Cerel. At 7:30 p.m. the fun continues behind the school with our first Pumpkin Glow. Kids and adults can be part of the fun by carving a pumpkin and dropping it off on Friday during the day. After the Magic Show, the road behind the school will become a “Pumpkin Glow” for everyone to enjoy! Cookies and juice will be available.

Farewell Reception for Mrs. Fitts

Thanks to everyone who came out to say farewell to our most wonderful principal! The cafeteria was crowded as hundreds of people wished Donna Fitts well on her new adventure. The wall of the cafeteria was lined with beautifully decorated posters made by Charlestown School students and the fourth grade chorus sang a beautiful farewell song. Officer Jim also presented her with a plaque on behalf of the Charlestown Police Dept. We will truly miss having Mrs. Fitts at our school!

Why Should You Come To PTO Meetings?
After all, you are a member of the PTO. Each and every parent of a child in Charlestown Elementary School is a member, and your comments and questions are always welcome. The PTO could always use some fresh ideas. It is a great forum to talk about things. We always have time for open discussion at the end of the meetings.

Additionally, the PTO raises money each year and only a handful of people decide how it is spent. Come to a meeting and help decide where that money is spent. We have a Cultural Arts committee that coordinates what programs your children will be seeing each year.

Basket Raffle This Saturday

Charlestown School T-Shirts and Sweatshirts are now available to purchase. Student T-Shirts are $ 9.50 each and come in size Small (4-6), Medium (8-10) and Large (12-14). Student Sweatshirts are $15.

Adult T-Shirts are $11.50 each for size Small, Medium and Large. XXL T-shirts are $13.00. Adult Sweatshirts are $17.50 XXL Sweatshirts are $20.

A sample of Charlestown School’s new T-shirt/Sweatshirt design is in the school office.

Please fill out the T-SHIRT ORDER FORM and return it to school along with a check or money order payable to Charlestown School PTO. DO NOT SEND CASH! Only Prepaid orders will be accepted.

Spaghetti Supper

The Charlestown PTO is hosting its 4th Annual Spaghetti Supper on Friday, January 22, 2010. We are seeking PARENT VOLUNTEERS and 4th GRADE STUDENT SERVERS for this event. There will be two dinner seatings: 5:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Background Checks at October Meeting

Come to the October PTO meeting and get your background check done! If you need yours renewed or have never had one, now is a great time to do it! The meeting begins at 6:30 and will last for about an hour. Background checks and desserts will begin once the meeting is adjourned. We will be providing entrees, desserts, salads and bread/butter. There are about 70 staff members, so we could use as many contributions as possible. Yearbooks On Sale Now!

Yearbooks sales have started! Forms went home last week and are due back to school by April 24. If you need a form, please contact Donna Caster at 364-3545 or email her at donnacaster@cox.net.

PTO will provide a complimentary copy to each 4th grader. The cost of the yearbooks is $17 each.

We cannot guarantee that the publishing company will ship any extra copies this Spring, so please place your order now!

Basket Raffle This Saturday

The Charlestown School Basket Raffle will be held this Saturday, from 10 am to 12 pm at the school. There are over 40 baskets and gift certificates and tickets are 20 for $5. The drawing will begin at 12:05. You do not have to be present to win. Baked goods are still needed for the bake sale. They can be brought anytime during the event. All proceeds from this event go to classroom grants. Hope to see you there!

Take a look at these fantastic baskets! They are just a few of the many that will be raffled on Saturday, March 21, at 10 am at the annual Charlestown School Basket Raffle. There will be a variety of theme baskets as well as gift certificates to local restaurants and businesses. There will also be a bake sale and a jellybean guess. Don't miss the fun!

Flash is coming together and we hope to have the brochures out by Monday! We have a nice variety of classes for the kids and we hope there's something for everyone!

The dates are Tuesdays, beginning March 3, and continuing March 10, March 17, March 24, March 31 and April 7.
